This article will provide a brief overview about the historical background, importance, concepts, principles and general debates about sustainable tourism.

Sustainable tourism is one of the pre-requisites of achieving sustainable development. the concept of tourism with sustainability and development gets its historical inclusion from mass tourism that got flourished in 1960s due to advent of jet aircraft and the passions for tourism got tremendous following and it also reached Third World countries (Dann, 2002). It was also argued that this boost pushed organizations like World Bank and UN to examine the cost benefit analysis of tourism and it was acknowledged that potential costs of tourism are far lower than financial benefits in shape of balance pf payment surpluses, infrastructure development, and employment and foreign exchange gains. So that gave rise to the concept of sustainable tourism as one of the source of bringing sustainable development. According to the World’s Summit on Sustainable Development (2002), it is claimed that Tourism is the world’s largest industry where in 2000, 698 million people travelled internationally which 7.3 % more than 1999. Similarly the economic worth of international tourism was US$477.9 billion in 2000 (Papers4you.com, 2006).

Tourism is one of the largest service sectors of Singapore. As of 2007, the tourism industry contributed 3% to Singapore’s GDP, and generated US$ 9.4 Billion in tourism receipts. This clearly shows the important role tourism industry plays in Singapore’s economy. To ensure that tourism remains a key economic pillar, a bold target, Tourism 2015, was unveiled in the year
2005. The major objectives of the initiative are to triple tourism receipts to US$ 30 Billion, doubling visitor arrivals to 17 Million, and creating an additional 100,000 jobs in the services sector by 2015, according to “Opportunities in Singapore Tourism Industry (2007-2009)”.

Mexico pledges once again its commitment to sustainable tourism by introducing new market-driven, economic opportunities that support conservation and community development. The Mexico Tourism Board and other Mexicans governmental tourism entities, in conjunction with the World Heritage Alliance (WHA), Expedia, Inc. and the United Nations Foundation, have initiated an educational partnership program for Expedia representatives and members of local communities in Mexico to ensure the protection of the delicate biodiversity, while empowering the rural communities through entrepreneurship.

Tourism is one of Ukraine fastest growing industries. Based on population density, the Ukrainian market is more than 50% larger than Hungary, Czech and Slovakia combined.Tourism has become one of the key factors driving the Ukrainian economy, generating approx. $ 4 billion in 2001, calculated in accordance with WTO (World Tourism Organization) methods. The State Tourism Administration reported that 5.8 million foreign tourists visited Ukraine in 2001, which represents a 31% growth compared with 2000. Overall in 2001, the State Border Control Service recorded nearly 11 million foreign arrivals in Ukraine. However, it should be noted that almost 75 percent of all foreign visitors arrived from Russia and other Newly Independent States.
